A Friendly New Way to Talk About Sensitive Skin
How one small mast cell is helping providers explain, parents reinforce, and children understand.
Sensitive skin can be difficult for children to describe and just as difficult for adults to explain. Itchy Izzy turns that uncertainty into a gentle, memorable conversation.
When Skin Is Hard to Explain
A child may know that their skin feels itchy, hot, tight, or uncomfortable, but they may not have the words to describe exactly what is happening. Parents and caregivers are left interpreting those feelings while helping the child follow a daily skincare routine.
In the exam room, providers face another challenge: explaining complex skin and immune-system concepts in a way that feels clear, reassuring, and age appropriate.
That communication gap is where Itchy Izzy comes in.
Created as the face of Persōn & Covey's pediatric education initiative, Izzy gives children a character they can relate to, parents a simple way to continue the conversation at home, and healthcare professionals a visual tool for clearer discussions with families.
The Science Behind Izzy
Izzy is more than a friendly character. She is inspired by a real part of the body's immune system: the mast cell.
Mast cells are specialized immune cells found throughout the body, including in the skin, airways, digestive tract, and connective tissues. When activated, they can release chemical messengers such as histamine and cytokines. These signals help coordinate an immune response and may contribute to familiar skin experiences such as itching, redness, irritation, and discomfort.
Izzy turns that complex idea into a simple visual starting point:
Helping Children Understand What Their Skin Is Saying
Children often learn best through pictures, stories, repetition, and play. Izzy turns an invisible biological process into something they can recognize. Her expressions and different skin states create a simple framework for identifying comfort, irritation, and flare-ups without complicated medical vocabulary.
A child might point to Calm Izzy when their skin feels comfortable or identify with Itchy Izzy when something feels wrong. That small moment helps the child participate in the conversation instead of feeling that adults are only talking around them.
Posters, coloring pages, routine guides, and take-home cards reinforce the same ideas in different settings, making skin education less intimidating and more memorable.
Giving Parents a Language They Can Use at Home
A skincare plan does not end when a family leaves the doctor's office. Daily cleansing, moisturizing, soothing care, and provider-directed flare-up support continue at home, where consistency can be challenging.
Izzy helps parents translate instructions into child-friendly reminders. Familiar phrases and visual cues can explain why gentle cleansing matters, why moisturizer should be used consistently, or why irritated skin may need extra care.
Simple guidance such as “Pat dry, don't rub” becomes easier to remember when it is connected to a character a child knows. This shared language makes routines feel more collaborative and keeps the lesson consistent from the exam room to the bathroom sink.

More Than a Mascot
Itchy Izzy represents a broader vision for pediatric skin education: gentle science delivered through engaging, age-appropriate tools. The goal is not simply to introduce a character, but to build an educational platform that makes sensitive skin easier for families to talk about and easier for children to understand.
As Izzy's world grows, Persōn & Covey plans to continue developing posters, activity sheets, routine guides, and educational takeaways for healthcare settings and the home.
When children can recognize what their skin may be communicating, parents can reinforce healthy routines, and providers can explain the science more approachably, everyone can begin the care journey speaking the same language.
